The Stakes Escalate

In Threat From Shadow, the stakes for the starship Philosopher King are raised to a fever pitch.

The crew of the Philosopher King thought they were safe after narrowly escaping a star system when first contact went sideways. But now, heading back to civilization with an artifact of advanced alien technology, they draw the unwelcome attention of some of the most dangerous forces in the galaxy.

Security Chief Maxwell Forrester, a retired Marine Major, must fight to keep his ship and crew safe while ferreting out a possible traitor in their midst. Mining pilot Ava Turner finds herself in the crosshairs as she struggles to prevent secrets from her past from catching up to her. Even the ship’s synthetic intelligence “Phil” becomes a target for unseen assailants wielding advanced technology of their own.

Captain Joshua Spear and his crew stand alone against a shadowy threat determined to exploit the alien system and its technology… or worse, unwittingly unleash the aliens themselves upon all humanity.

Spear frowned deeply. “Phil,” he said again, “get the port authority if you can.” “Connecting to port authority now,” said Phil almost immediately. Spear was surprised at the instant connection. He wasn’t sure if that was a good sign or a bad one. When the comm connected, it was audio only. Spear addressed the station. “This is Captain Joshua Spear of the Philosopher King,” he said. “We are in the process of disembarking, but there seems to be an impound lock on our ship coupling. Could you please explain why this is the case?” Suddenly, a video feed opened up to accompany the audio. It was grainy, as though working through interference, and showed a harried-looking port authority officer standing in port operations. “Philosopher King,” the man said, “we have no idea why your coupling is locked, but you’re not the only one. We are experiencing a station-wide systems outage. I’ve never seen anything like this before. I have never…” The feed cut out suddenly. “Joshua!” Jill said in a screaming whisper. “Look at the station!” Everyone on the bridge stared dumbstruck at the image of Marcell station on the holoscreen as every one of the station’s lights began to flicker and then go out.
